SANHEDRIN – Correction

With their new ‘Lights On’ LP coming on Metal Blade in March, NYC’s Sanhedrin continue to trip it up as a trio specializing in anthemic yet doomy power metal. They’re especially great at evoking retro stylings sans fancy production.

Erica Stoltz’s raw pipes ring and intermingle with the guitar chug and no-frills-but stylish drumming in a most excellent way, the mix all definitely emphasizes the chemistry of this bunch and their dedication to flying the flag on purity.

IRON FATE – Hellish Queen

After no new album from these Germans in 12 years, ‘Crimson Messiah’ finds the return of Iron Fate to be a blazing one. Crisp, melodic power metal is the name of the game here: swooping Cirith Ungol-style vocal screamer action going on, a second guitarist tightening the game with trim, animated instrumental craft and a definite thrash undercurrent amidst some epic groove.
Recently touted on Horrox’s ‘By This Wax I Rule’ show.

MIZMOR – Wit’s End

This project of multi-instrumentalist A.L.N. isn’t for the fragile-minded, a headfirst belly plop into a pool of hopelessness to coincide with the times. Starting with spoken samples, scrapy strums and tension, it all eventually explodes into a thick gelatinous goo of plodding distortion, tortured cries and the forward motion of a flatbed carrying a mountain somewhere. Twelve minutes in it fizzles and you are left to sit in the echo of a disappearing screech, hissing amps and eventually nothingness.

ZEKE – Cities On Flame With Rock and Roll

Seattle longtermers Zeke resurface joined by High On Fire’s Jeff Matz to knock out a pretty good update on the Blue Oyster classic. Ripple Music has just issued ‘Domimance and Submission’ a full-on BÖC tribute LP featuring the likes of Mondo Gerenator, Year of the Cobra and Ape Machine.

APES – No Will To Live

Snarling out of Quebec, Apes’ ‘Lullabies For Eternal Sleep’ EP (Translation Loss) is some true rattle. Rife with undercurrent of soundscapes and ambience, it’s all pummel and in-your-face mastiff bark while instrumentation goes off the rails in incessantly churning intensity. Dylan from Full of Hell makes an appearance too if that’s an indication of the kinda stuff we’re dealing with here.

ABHORIA, BORIS Among Gimme Metal’s Top Tracks of the Week

Gimme Metal Program Director Brian Turner delivers the week’s top 5 office buzz-worthy tracks.

ABHORIA – False Idols

Comprised of ex-members of Ashen Horde, Catheter and Vimana, Abhoria’s crisp take on classic black metal (particularly Immortal) retains a faithfulness with a modernity that is well played. The latest and self titled release is coming our way on Prosthetic soon, and be sure to mark your calendars as the band takes over Gimme on February 1st!

BORIS – Drowning By Numbers

Enduring and never running in place, Japan’s Boris have landed on Sacred Bones with their new ‘W’ LP out January 21st, and it sounds glorious. Howling wind guitars, backwards water flow, crackling electronics and Wata’s sublime whispers swirl in the mix far from the Melvins’ towering-amp vibes from Boris’ days of yore. Noise Age? A true leap into new terrain and always interesting to hear what their next door that opens leads to.

AEVITERNE – The Ailing Facade

Like fellow New Yawkers Imperial Triumphant, Aeviterne know how to whip up the No Wave-soaked atmosphere and alleyways, a crushing death metal variant at hand here blasting any textures and structures into pieces while still threading the needle. Imagine Gorguts with the hovering buzz of “Death Valley 69” looming overhead with a total furnace of unplaceable instrumentation wallowing around trying to escape a tarpit. The band features Garett Bussanick and Eric Rizk formerly of Flourishing, and as a consolidated unit they create a real cacophony of total destruction and disorientation.

MYRDØD – Orb Weaver

Recent discovery to our ears from Anthony Bartkewicz’s Grave Convulsions weekly blast, this bizarre outfit released three LPs and 4 EPs in 2021! The duo of vocalist Fractal Creature and multi-instrumentalist/vocalist Søppelskaler summon forth a gaseous heap of billowing warped atmosphere, ungodly distant cries and a unlikely wedding of dungeon synth and ferocious black metal undercurrents. It’s unlike anything we’ve ever heard and still, really, are unable to fully pin it down, so just lay back and soak in the cosmic claustrophobia here.

PANTHEIST – Wilderness

Epic, surrealist doom emanating from Greek artist Kostant Pangiotou who’s been at it for the best part of the last two decades. Almost spaghetti-western vibes swirl around thick billowing clouds of amplified guitar, restrained croaks from the back corner of the mix swirl the gothic and grandiose.

VENOM PRISON, WORM SHEPHERD Among Gimme Metal’s Top Tracks of the Week

VENOM PRISON – Pain of Oizys

Advertisement. Scroll to continue reading.

Over the last few years Venom Prison remained a viable yet underrated addition to the metal world, charting new terrain for death metal’s future. “Pain of Oizys” is a surprising left hook: solemn, deeply meditative and incredibly sad in its unfurling and vocalist Larissa’s presentation, then switching channels seamlessly into chaotic explosion and ultimately settling back into piano-flanked meditation for its conclusion. A fascinating evolution for a continually challenging band and intrigued to see what their next moves are on ‘Erebos’ out February 2nd on Century Media.

WORM SHEPHERD – River Ov Knives

Achingly beautiful blackened deathcore from an ever-evolving Massachusetts combo. Technically addled, yet allowing space to sweep a listener throughout a well crafted cacophony of noise, symphonic swells, and unexpected colors. Their latest on Unique Leader release ‘Ritual Hymns’ hits on January 14th with an ensuing Gimme DJ special coming on the 19th. Tune in and join the live chat.

IMMOLATION – Apostle

Three decades down with their forthcoming ‘Acts of God’ out in February on Nuclear Blast, Immolation show zero signs of letting up with total face-pummel death and sublime waves of epic emotion emanating from the infinite tarpit from whence they dwell. And, breaking news, our own Danny Lilker will world premiere their next track “The Age of No Light” on his next Braindeath show coming up on Gimme Metal January 21st 7pm ET/4pm PT!

COMPPPUTT – Computer Generated Black Metal

Unlike the completely bonkers, AI-smeared Relentless Doppelganger releases of yore, Washington State’s Comppputt may or may not have some ‘human’ hands in this, but regardless the title alone gives you a good inkling of what’s going on here. Rather that chattering, cutup relentless insanity of RD, here it sounds like Robby the Robot has boiled the atmosphere of black metal down to its molten DNA form, wispy winds of some digital forest groan from afar with dim growls and an Aphex-like drum roll that never moves forward but just thumps you over and over into submission.

MALIGNANT ALTAR – Rite of Kraus

A highly awaited new addition to the Dark Descent release canon, death/grind so grisly it drips soot and grease from the getgo notes. Production both spacious and suffocating at the same time, rotted riffs plopping at your feet while some ghastly gnome huffs in your face. ‘Realms Of Exquisite Morbidity’ finds these Texans plodding six grueling tracks over the course of an LP, an apt way to welcome the new year.
