VENOM PRISON, WORM SHEPHERD Among Gimme Metal’s Top Tracks of the Week

VENOM PRISON – Pain of Oizys

Advertisement. Scroll to continue reading.

Over the last few years Venom Prison remained a viable yet underrated addition to the metal world, charting new terrain for death metal’s future. “Pain of Oizys” is a surprising left hook: solemn, deeply meditative and incredibly sad in its unfurling and vocalist Larissa’s presentation, then switching channels seamlessly into chaotic explosion and ultimately settling back into piano-flanked meditation for its conclusion. A fascinating evolution for a continually challenging band and intrigued to see what their next moves are on ‘Erebos’ out February 2nd on Century Media.

WORM SHEPHERD – River Ov Knives

Achingly beautiful blackened deathcore from an ever-evolving Massachusetts combo. Technically addled, yet allowing space to sweep a listener throughout a well crafted cacophony of noise, symphonic swells, and unexpected colors. Their latest on Unique Leader release ‘Ritual Hymns’ hits on January 14th with an ensuing Gimme DJ special coming on the 19th. Tune in and join the live chat.

IMMOLATION – Apostle

Advertisement. Scroll to continue reading.

Three decades down with their forthcoming ‘Acts of God’ out in February on Nuclear Blast, Immolation show zero signs of letting up with total face-pummel death and sublime waves of epic emotion emanating from the infinite tarpit from whence they dwell. And, breaking news, our own Danny Lilker will world premiere their next track “The Age of No Light” on his next Braindeath show coming up on Gimme Metal January 21st 7pm ET/4pm PT!

COMPPPUTT – Computer Generated Black Metal

Unlike the completely bonkers, AI-smeared Relentless Doppelganger releases of yore, Washington State’s Comppputt may or may not have some ‘human’ hands in this, but regardless the title alone gives you a good inkling of what’s going on here. Rather that chattering, cutup relentless insanity of RD, here it sounds like Robby the Robot has boiled the atmosphere of black metal down to its molten DNA form, wispy winds of some digital forest groan from afar with dim growls and an Aphex-like drum roll that never moves forward but just thumps you over and over into submission.

MALIGNANT ALTAR – Rite of Kraus

A highly awaited new addition to the Dark Descent release canon, death/grind so grisly it drips soot and grease from the getgo notes. Production both spacious and suffocating at the same time, rotted riffs plopping at your feet while some ghastly gnome huffs in your face. ‘Realms Of Exquisite Morbidity’ finds these Texans plodding six grueling tracks over the course of an LP, an apt way to welcome the new year.

What to stream in January 2022 on Netflix, Disney Plus, HBO Max, more

Ozark season 4 what to stream in january

It’s a brand new year, and with 2022 comes an exciting array of TV shows and movies on your favorite streaming services throughout the month of January. In this one-stop shop, we’ll tell you what to stream monthly across Netflix, Disney Plus, Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, Peacock, and other major platforms.

So without further ado, here are 10 streaming titles that you can catch in January 2022 as you kickstart a new year of binging.

What to stream in January 2022

Editor’s note: We’ll be updating this list of what to stream across different services every month as new TV shows and movies make it to streaming services.

The Tender Bar

Where: Amazon Prime Video
Release date: January 7

Directed by Academy Award-winner George Clooney and starring fellow Oscar winner Ben Affleck, The Tender Bar is a coming-of-age drama based on J. R. Moehringer’s memoir of the same name. Streaming on Amazon Prime Video, it sees a young J. R. growing up on Long Island with his eccentric family. Coping with the disappointment of an absentee father, he forms a bond with his supportive — if unconventional — uncle Charlie and the patrons of the bar he runs.

Search Party season 5

Where: HBO Max
Release date: January 7

The fifth and final season of critical darling Search Party hits HBO Max this month. Following her near-death experience, Dory enters a very public business partnership with tech billionaire Tunnel Quinn, played by Jeff Goldblum. She folds her friends into the mysterious, altruistic, and cult-like venture. All 10 episodes of the new season will be available at once for easy binging,

Peacemaker

Where: HBO Max
Release date: January 13

The DCEU’s first new streaming series is heading to HBO Max this month. After making a splash in last year’s The Suicide Squad, John Cena’s comically patriotic superhero Peacemaker will get to headline his own show. The series follows the origins of Peacemaker and his uneasy alliance with the US government task force in charge of The Suicide Squad. The Suicide Squad director James Gunn returns as writer of all eight episodes and directs five, including the first.

Wolf Like Me

Where: Peacock
Release date: January 13

Peacock and Australian streamer Stan. have been keeping their cards pretty close on this one. The six-part romantic mystery series sees Isla Fisher and Josh Gad as two characters coming together following the death of Fisher’s character’s husband. There’s clearly something bubbling under the surface here, with dark secrets and intrigue promising some big twists and revelations. We won’t know much more until the show drops on Peacock though.

Hotel Transylvania: Transformania

Where: Amazon Prime Video
Release date: January 14

Fans of the Hotel Transylvania films may be sad this one won’t hit theaters, but the latest film will be available on Amazon Prime Video around the globe on January 14. In this latest title, Van Helsing’s “Monsterification Ray” goes wrong, turning Drac and his monster friends human, while Johnny, in turn, becomes a monster. Now, they have to work together, adjusting to their new mismatched bodies, to find a cure before it’s too late.

How I Met Your Father

Where: Hulu
Release date: January 18

People were naturally a bit skeptical of a new spin on How I Met Your Mother when it was announced. And yet Hulu‘s gender-flipped sitcom reboot starring Hilary Duff looks incredibly charming. Maybe it’s all the bad news of the last two years talking, but the light tone, nostalgic format, and clever banter shown in the trailers make How I Met Your Father look like a delightful new show to follow week to week. It’s one of the most exciting new streaming shows to check out this month.

Ozark season 4

Where: Netflix
Release date: January 21

Part one of the long-awaited final season of Ozark will be one of Netflix’s first new streaming releases of the new year. The season three finale saw the Byrde family getting themselves deeper into the criminal underworld of the Ozarks and reestablishing some degree of control for themselves. The season also ended with Ruth making some shocking discoveries that may put her in direct conflict with the Byrdes. No word yet on when part two of the final season will drop, but part one ought to keep us going for a while longer.

Servant season 3

Where: Apple TV Plus
Release date: January 21

One of the major standouts of Apple TV Plus’ slate of original programming, Servant has been the sleeper hit of the platform. From M. Night Shyamalan, the series follows a grieving couple who find themselves reacquainted with their dead infant son when a mysterious new nanny comes into their lives. Servant is smart, chilling, and completely unpredictable, and the third season is one of the most exciting upcoming shows of 2022.

The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild

Where: Disney Plus
Release date: January 28

Your favorite prehistoric characters are back in the latest Ice Age installment, coming to Disney Plus. When the possum brothers Crash and Eddie strike out on their own in search of a little independence, they find themselves trapped beneath the ice in a massive cave inhabited by dinosaurs. With the help of one-eyed weasel Buck Wild and some new friends, they have to save the Lost World from dinosaurs.

The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window

Where: Netflix
Release date: January 28

The title alone tells you exactly what territory we’re in here. Think The Girl on the Train meets The Woman in the Window, for starters. A shut-in with a drinking problem thinks she’s found a lifeline back into society in the form of new neighbors, but her hopes are dashed when she witnesses a gruesome murder across the street. Or is this all just a misunderstanding? Judging by the trailer, every trope is here: the endless glasses of wine, the overinvested by skeptical cop, the unreliable narrator. Kristen Bell stars in what promises to be a loving ribbing of a massively popular genre.

Fender CEO Says COVID Pandemic Has Spurred New Interest In Guitar

The demand for guitars has gone through the roof throughout the pandemic. According to Fender CEO Andy Mooney in an interview with CNBC’s The Exchange, about 16 million Americans bought a guitar in 2021 along. This is especially shocking considering that supply chain issues have driven prices up on guitars “about 10 percent,” according to Mooney.

Advertisement. Scroll to continue reading.

“We actually just completed a very comprehensive research project and found that in the U.S. alone 16 million entrants – seven percent of the entire population picked up guitar, in many cases for the first time, last year. So there’s massive amounts of new people coming in and trying to find the best guitar for them to learn the instrument.”

Mooney added that the demand is “truly remarkable the demand that’s out there. People wanna use their time at home wisely and invest in activities they really feel good about.” Equally interesting is the demographic of Americans buying the guitars. Mooney noted that of the 16 million, nearly two-thirds were between 16 and 34, and that the growth in the industry because of the surge has been excellent.

“Pre-Covid, the industry was growing at 10 percent. At the height of Covid, it had grown at 35-plus percent. We anticipate it continuing to grow at least at the pre-Covid rate, if not more.”

NITA STRAUSS Will Play On ALICE COOPER’s New Album

Nita Strauss has been a part of Alice Cooper‘s live band since 2014 and is finally getting the chance to play on one of his records. Strauss said in an interview with Meltdown that she’s currently the only member of Cooper‘s live band not to have played on a record, and considers playing on the new one a huge honor.

Advertisement. Scroll to continue reading.

“I actually have a call with [Alice Cooper‘s management] this weekend to discuss the progress of it. The last that I heard, we were in Nashville working on it. The band and I sat down and recorded quite a bit of music for this upcoming record. The band did also have a huge part in the writing this time, which is the first time that’s happened in the eight years that I’ve been in the band. So it was really, really fun — really exciting for us to get to work with a legend like Bob Ezrin. [It was] a huge, huge honor to be in the studio with him and Alice creating what we hope will be some more Alice Cooper music to just add to his legacy.”

“I’m on the live DVD. I’m on the live album releases, the live tracks that are bonus tracks and stuff, but [this is my] first studio album with Alice. I’m actually the only person in the band that hasn’t recorded anything with Alice before, so this is huge for me. [I’m] very, very honored.”

Strauss added that she has no idea when the record will come out. In the meantime, Strauss is also working on her new “half instrumental, half vocal” solo album. You can catch Cooper on tour at one of the many dates below.
